Presented in association with Georganne Aldrich Heller, with support
from Culture Ireland, the New York State Council on the Arts and the
New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, award-winning Irish actor and writer,
Donal O'Kelly, brought his one man hit show, CATALPA (Edinburgh Fringe First, London Time Out Critics' Choice, Best Event Melbourne International Festival) to the stage of the Irish Arts Center
in New York for a limited, very well attended run from November 12
through November 30, 2008. With an evocative soundtrack, thoughtfully composed and
performed live by renowned Irish musician Trevor Knight, CATALPA was an
absolute, rip-roaring delight from start to finish - and well worth the wait for
this particular member of the audience.
Check out some of these recent reviews about the show:
"..a bravura bit of showmanship that is worth seeing for its sheer audacity....Catalpa is a fine feat of storytelling."
"As a single performance...the writer-performer's high-seas-adventure story is vast and generous, and his ability to contain all its double-dealing, danger and passion is astonishing."
"While O'Kelly invites us into his own imagination, Catalpa is
largely dependent on ours. Luckily we don't have to work too hard since
he brings this tale to life with an impressive use of physicality,
gesture, and vocal inflection. The additional use of colored light cues
and a fantastic musical score establish the myriad tones in this piece."
